Mantled Baskettail
Epitheca [Tetragoneuria] semiaquea
The Mantled Baskettail (Epitheca [Tetragoneuria] semiaquea) is a small, thick-bodied dragonfly which primarily occurs if the far eastern areas of the United States. There are many records, however, scattered in parts of the mid west and south-central United States as well. The individual in the first 3 shots was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in April, 2007. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash. These shots as well as a specimen collected at the same location, provided a 1st Travis Co. record.
The Mantled Baskettails (first 2 shots and last two shots male, middle shot female) in the next 5 images shown here were near Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in March, 2008. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The Mantled Baskettails in the next 4 images were in the Davy Crockett National Forest, Houston Co., Texas, in March 2008. These images were taken with the same gear as described just previously. The dusting of small specks on the abdomen of the dragonfly shown here was pollen, probably pine pollen, which was in the air and thick on the ground on this day.
The Mantled Baskettail shown here was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in early March, 2009, establishing a new early date record for Texas by 2 weeks.
