Swift River Cruiser
Macromia illinoiensis
The Swift River Cruiser (Macromia illinoiensis) was formerly known as Illinois River Cruiser. The first 3 shots shown here are likely M. i. georgina, a subspecies known as Georgia River Cruiser. These dragonflies are a member of the Cruiser (Macromiidae) family of dragonflies and occur in the the eastern half of the United States. It is fairly distinctive with its mostly black and yellow body and showing a single yellow stripe on the thorax. The first three individuals shown here were digital shots in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in June, 2003, and were taken with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200 mm F2.8L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash. Compare with the Bronzed and Royal River Cruisers.

The immature cruiser shown here was also in Austin, Texas. This shot was taken in May, 2007, with the same gear as described previously. The next two shots, of more mature individuals, were also in Austin in May, 2007.
