Hine's Emerald
Somatochlora hineana
The Hine's Emerald (Somatochlora hineana) is the only dragonfly species which is federally listed as endangered. Very little was known about this species as recently as a decade ago when it was only known from a few locations in Wisconsin. Since its endangered status, however, numerous studies have been done and the species has been found in a number of other states in the mid west at many different sites. Its endangered status may no longer be appropriate, but this subject will be decided at some future time. The first 8 shots on this page of a male Hine's Emerald were taken in Reynolds Co., Missouri, in June, 2009, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
