Duckweed Firetail
Telebasis byersi
The Duckweed Firetail (Telebasis byersi) is an eastern species which is visually almost identical to Desert Firetail (T. salva). In hand examination may be necessary to make the identification. The Duckweed Firetail is often seen on duckweed covered ponds but it may also use small lily pads as shown shown here. The male shown here was in Jasper Co., Texas, in June, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 l IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The teneral female Duckweed Firetail on the right was in the Kisatchie National Forest, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, in May, 2011. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
