Carolina Saddlebags
Tramea carolina
The Carolina Saddlebags (Tramea carolina) is a species of the eastern United States. Within Texas the species may be found in the eastern portions of the state. The red maculation on the wings is a little more extensive than other Tramea species, including the anal loop. The first 2 images on this page show a male Carolina Saddlebags in Jasper Co., Texas, in June, 2009.
The female Carolina Saddlebags in the next two images was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in November, 2010. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash. These shots represented only the 2nd record of the species in the Austin area (it is usually found farther east) as well as a new late date for the species in Texas.
The Carolina Saddlebags in this shot was at the Red Slough Wildlife Management Area, McCurtain Co., Oklahoma, in May, 2011.
The next two shots of a male Carolina Saddlebags were taken in Conway, Horry Co., South Carolina, in May, 2012.
