The Bayou Clubtail (Arigomphus maxwelli) is a dragon of the south-central United States, ranging from western Alabama to parts of east Texas and north, sparingly, to very southern Illinois. It inhabits areas some swamps (with moving water), bayous, and sometimes small lakes. The first shot on this page shows a male at Bouton Lake, Angelina National Forest, Jasper Co., Texas, in April, 2011. This male landed on a plant and one of its wings is pushed up at an odd angle due to its landing posture. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500 lens and Canon 580 flash.
The next six shots of Bayou Clubtail were taken at the Lance Rosier Unit of the Big Thicket National Preserve, Hardin Co., Texas, in May, 2011, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
