The Atlantic Bluet (Enallagma doubledayi) is a widespread eastern damselfly that occurs west to east Texas. Within Texas, the species can be hard to find. The first seven images on this page were taken in June, 2011, at Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area, Anderson Co., Texas. Martin Reid and I found this population on two small lakes on that preserve. Visually, this species is very similar to Familiar Bluet (Enallagma civile), and care must be taken to make this identification. In this case, several were netted and the appendages were examined in the hand. Several specimens have been deposited into the insect collection at the University of Texas. The first seven shots on this page were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash. Some shots of these bluets by Martin Reid as well as some identification comments may be seen here. The first two images here show male Atlantic Bluets.
On the right is a pair in copula.
The next four images show male Atlantic Bluets.
The next three images of male Atlantic Bluets were taken at Conway, Horry Co., South Carolina, in May, 2012, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
