Marbled Godwit
Limosa fedoa
The Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa) nests in south central Canada and the north central United States. It is a species of the high plains grasslands of those regions during the summer months. In winter it may be found along both coasts. The first four shots here were all taken in June, 1991, of breeding birds at Bowdoin N.W.R., Phillips Co., Montana, with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4 X extender on Fuji Velvia. The Marbled Godwit shown here was wintering on the Texas Gulf coast at Galveston in February, 2007. This is a digital image taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next 4 images shown here were taken at Benton Lake N.W.R., Cascade Co., Montana, in June, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/5 L IS lens and 1.4X extender. The bird shown here is looking up at another godwit overhead. Godwits constantly circle any passing vehicle offering some interesting chances to get some flight shots of this species.
The next 9 shots were all taken at Bowdoin N.W.R., Phillips Co., Montana, in June, 2007, with the same gear as above.
The Marbled Godwit shown here was standing in native prairie grassland near Whitewater, Phillips Co., Montana, also in June, 2007.
The two shots just below and left were taken at Medicine Lake N.W.R., Sheridan Co., Montana, again, in June 2007.
The Marbled Godwit shown here (standing in front of a winter plumaged American Avocet) was at Bolivar Flats, Galveston Co., Texas, in November, 2009. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
