Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus)

The *Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus)* breeds along both coasts of southern South America as well as on many offshore islands in that area and the Falklands. Some populations nest under bushes, but the populations I have spent the most time with nest in burrows they construct in the peat soil. The pair at right was standing at the entrance to their burrow on Sea Lion Island in the Falklands in January, 1996. This image was taken with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/4.5 lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
The shot at right was taken on Bleaker Island in the Falklands, in January, 2005 with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender.
