Long-billed Curlew
Numenius americanus
The Long-billed Curlew (Numenius americanus) is a nesting bird of the grassland prairies of much of the central and north central United States and southern Canada. The species winters on all of our coastlines as well as the coasts of Mexico and southward. The first 9 shots on this page show Long-billed Curlews in their breeding habitat at Benton Lake N.W.R., Cascade Co., Montana, in June, 2007. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens, sometimes with a 1.4X extender.
The bird on the right is vocalizing while gazing skyward at another curlew passing overhead.
