Limpkin
Aramus guarauna
The Limpkin (Aramus guarauna) is a large heron-like bird that within the United States is essentially confined to Florida. There are occasional records and reports of the species from other states along the Gulf of Mexico and up the Atlantic coastline. The species occurs southward into South America. The shot shown here was taken in April, 1996, in the Everglades, Dade Co., Florida. This image was taken with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/4.5 lens. See below for some other images.
The next five shots of Limpkins were taken on Lake Tohopekaliga, Osceola Co., Florida, in February, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
The Limpkin below has an Apple Snail in its bill. This is probably the Channeled Apple Snail which is an introduced species.
The next three shots show a Limpkin preening.
