Least Tern
Sternula antillarum
The Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) breeds across a wide area of North America in both fresh and salt water habitats. It is the smallest North American tern and in breeding plumage has a black cap and name with a large white forehead patch and a yellow bill. The first two shots shown here show an adult in flight at Port Isabel, Cameron Co., Texas, in May, 2007. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The next 10 shots show courtship behavior between a pair of Least Terns at Texas Point, Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co., Texas, in June, 2008. One bird, probably a male, brought a number of small fish to a presumed female while she stood on the beach. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The next 4 shots, of a resting or preening bird, were taken at the same location and date as the above shots.
The Least Tern shown here is still in basic plumage. Boca Chica, Cameron Co., Texas, May, 2010.
