Killdeer
Charadrius vociferus
The Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) is a common resident bird across most of North America and Mexico. The species may occur as far south as northern South America on occasion. The first four images here were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens. The first two shots were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas during December, 2005. The 3rd and 4th shots were taken in Hidalgo Co., Texas in May, 2006.
The next three images below were taken at McFaddin N.W.R., Jefferson Co., Texas, in May, 2001. A pair of Killdeer was nesting on the edge of the parking lot at the refuge headquarters. The 2nd shot shows a Killdeer on the nest, while the next shot shows a bird standing over the nest with several eggs visible. These images were all taken with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens on Fuji Provia film.
The shot at right was taken in Kenedy Co., Texas, in April, 2002 with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender on Fuji Provia.
