Horned Grebe
Podiceps auritus
The Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) nests in fresh water marshes and lake edges across much of Canada and parts of the northern United States in the Great Plains area. The bird winters on both coasts of the U.S. and many can often be found wintering on fresh-water reservoirs in parts of Texas. In June, 2001, Larry Ditto and I were on a photo trip in Montana when we came across a breeding pair of Horned Grebes at Benton Lake N. W. R., Cascade Co., Montana. This cooperative pair of birds soon got accustomed to us and went about their business as if we were not there. Shown below are the pair together, one bird at the nest (which had eggs) and two shots of single individuals. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens on Fuji Velvia.
