Birds of Hawaii

In August, 2012, I spent ten days in Hawaii on a family vacation. Bird photography was not the focus of the trip and we only visited Oahu and the big island during our stay. I was able to take a few bird images which I will post here. Many of Hawaii's commonly seen birds are species which were introduced to the islands many years ago and have become part of the avifauna. There are still native birds on the islands, but some of them can be very hard to find and even harder to photograph.

Nene (Branta sandvicensis)

Hawaiian Coot (Fulica alai)

Hawaiian Gallinule (Gallinula galeata sandvicensis)

Pacific Golden-Plover (Pluvialis fulva)

Kalij Pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos)

Spotted Dove (Streptopelia chinensis)

Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata)

White Tern (Gygis alba)

Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis)

Hawai'i 'Amakihi (Hemignathus virens virens)

'I'iwi (Vestiaria coccinea)
