The Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) is a diving duck which nests across northern Canada and Alaska, In winter it may be found along both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States as well as many inland locations south through Texas. It is similar to its close relative, the Lesser Scaup, but typically has a larger bill, a more rounded greenish tinted head and bright white sides. The white wing stripe of this species, visible in flight, is also quite distinct from Lesser Scaup. The first two shots on this page show a pair of Greater Scaup at Nome, Alaska, in May, 2012. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The next seven shots were taken with the same photo gear as the earlier images, but in Anchorage, Alaska, in June, 2012.
