Golden-fronted Woodpecker
Melanerpes aurifrons
The Golden-fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons) occurs from parts of Oklahoma southward through south and west Texas into Mexico. The male at right was photographed in Kenedy Co., Texas in April, 2002, with a Canon EOS 1V and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Velvia. The next two shots, of a male and female, are digital captures in Starr Co., Texas, in November, 2004, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens.
On the right is a male Golden-fronted Woodpecker in Hidalgo Co., Texas, in December, 2005. It was photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens. The bird is probing into a crevice in a log.
The next four images, three shots of females and one shot of a male, were taken at the same location and with the same equipment as the image immediately preceding, but in February, 2006.
 
Next are three more shots, all from April, 2006, from the same location and with the same equipment as the previous images.
 
The next 2 shots show a female Golden-fronted Woodpecker at a nest Cavity in McAllen, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in April, 2009. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The male Golden-fronted Woodpecker peering from a nest cavity was taken at the same location and time as the 2 female shots just previous.
The male Golden-fronted Woodpecker on the right was at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Randall Co., Texas, in January, 2011. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
