Great Gray Owl

| The Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa) is truly a creature of the far north. The species is resident across much of Canada and breeds in the Pacific Northwest areas of the United States as well. It is generally considered the largest North American owl. The bird pictured on this page was one of a pair feeding young near Havillah, Okanogan Co., Washington in June, 1998. The photos were taken with a Canon T-90 & FD 400mm F4.5 lens on a BushHawk shoulder mount with Fuji Sensia 100. This owl was found while I was co-leading a VENT trip with Bob Sundstrom. I wrote an article for the VENT newsletter regarding these owls and the trip which may be of interest. |  |
