Franklin's Gull
Larus pi pix can
The Franklin's Gull (Larus pipixcan) is a small, dark-hooded gull of the mid-continent. The species nests in parts of the northern great plains of the United States and in many areas of central Canada. During migration, the species passes through Texas and Mexico and may be found occasionally on the Texas coast in winter or during migration. Flocks of dozens or even hundreds of these birds are sometimes seen during migration. The shot shown here and the next one down show an adult Franklin's Gull on the Gulf Coast of Texas in Jefferson County in April, 1992. The 2nd shot shows the Franklin's Gull shown here standing next to an adult Laughing Gull for a nice comparison. These shots were taken with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/4.5 lens on Kodachrome 200 film.
The Franklin's Gull shown here is an adult in moult in August, 1999, at Bear River Refuge, Box Elder Co., Utah. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F/2.8 L lens and 2X extender on Fuji Sensia film.
The next five shots show adult Franklin's Gulls in flight and were all taken at Bowdoin N.W.R., Phillips Co., Montana, in June, 2001. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Provia film.
