Eastern Bluebird
Sialia sialis
The Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) is a member of the thrush family and can be fairly common in open woodland and meadows across much of the eastern United States and southern Canada. The species will utilize man-made nest boxes which makes it a favorite among bird watchers across the country. The image shown here shows a female Eastern Bluebird at the entrance to her nest cavity in a dead tree in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in May, 2009. This image, and the next 17 images to follow, were all taken at that same time and location with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
A male Eastern Bluebird, the mate of the female above, keeps watch as the female enters her nest. The next 3 shots show the same male.
This is the same female Eastern Bluebird as above, perched near the nest.
The next 7 images show various poses of the male Eastern Bluebird.
The next 4 images show a juvenile Eastern Bluebird which had recently fledged.
The next five shots (four shots of a male and one of a female) were taken in eastern Travis Co., Texas, in January, 2011, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
