Dunlin
Calidris alpina
The Dunlin (Calidris alpina) is a small shorebird which breeds in parts of the arctic areas of Canada and Alaska. The species winters along all three coasts of the United States and south into Mexico. The winter plumaged birds in the top five images shown here (also known as basic plumage) were all in Galveston Co., Texas in February, 2007. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next 8 images show Dunlins moulting into breeding plumage in late April, 2009, on South Padre Island, Cameron Co., Texas. These shots were all taken with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens. The next shot illustrates the flexibility of a shorebird's bill.
The next 6 images of Dunlins in mostly breeding plumage were taken on South Padre Island, Cameron Co., Texas, in May, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
The next two shots of a breeding plumaged Dunlin were taken at Gambell, St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, in May, 2012. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
