| Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) is an extremely variable species which occurs across all of the U.S. and Canada. There are a number of "forms" or subspecies, most of which may be distinguished in the field. Some individuals, however, seem to be a combination of several of these forms and an accurate identification beyond species level is a challenge. Dark-eyed Juncos breed across much of Canada, the New England area, and the western United States and winter across the remainder of the country. The birds in the next 4 images were near the town of Lincoln, Lincoln Co., New Mexico, in November, 2005. The images were shot with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
