Lamyra gulo
The robber fly below is known as Lamyra gulo. This robber was photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and an EF 300 mm F/4L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash in January, 2006, at the Polokwane Nature Reserve near Pietersburg, Limpopo Province, South Africa. It was a very large, flashy robber, and I was only able to get a few shots from this angle, then it flew off and could not be found again. My thanks Michael Thomas for taking an interest in the photos of this robber and for sending the images to Torsten Dikow at the American Museum of Natural History. Torsten immediately recognized the species from his studies of this group of robber flies.
