The Horse Lubber Grasshopper (Taeniopoda eques) occurs across much of the American Southwest and parts of Mexico. At times they may be commonly seen in both the Chihuahuan and Sonoran Deserts of the southwest. On occasions I have seen thousands of these insects as vast hordes move across the desert floor in the fall. The 4 shots here were taken in the Chinati Mountains of West Texas in Presidio Co., in September, 2004, with a Canon EOS 1 D Mark II and an EF 180 mm Macro lens. This is a large grasshopper which may be 2.5 to 3 inches in length. | ![]() |
