The Brunner's Mantis (Brunneria borealis) in the first two images on this page was photographed in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in August, 2003. The Brunner's Mantis looks much like an insect called a Walking Stick, but it is a true Mantis. This mantis can be extremely difficult to locate as it moves along green leaves and twigs, but when out in the open, such as this one, they are quite visible. Interestingly, males are unknown for this species, and reproduction is by means of parthenogenesis, which means that the female is able to produce eggs that can develop without fertilization.
