Smoky Rubyspot
Hetaerina titia
The Smoky Rubyspot (Hetaerina titia) is a large broad-winged damselfly which occurs across the eastern U.S. It perches along the edges of shady streams and rivers and makes quick, darting flights over the water as it forages. The first two photos here are digital captures in Travis Co., Texas in June, 2003, and were shot with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200 mm F2.8 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash. A male is shown (at right) and a female (with white stigmas) is at the bottom. The third photo is another shot of a female, also in Travis Co., Texas, in August, 2005. This image was shot with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 EX flash. I have another page about this species and its variable wing color patterns here.
The next 4 images of Smoky Rubyspot were taken in August, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash. The first 3 shots were taken in Lockhart, Caldwell Co., Texas, and the 4th shot was taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas.
The next two shots male Smoky Rubyspots were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in November, 2009.
The male Smoky Rubyspot on the right was on the San Marcos River, Caldwell Co., Texas, in July, 2012.
