Russet-tipped Clubtail
Stylurus plagiatus
The Russet-tipped Clubtail (Stylurus plagiatus) occurs across much of the eastern and southern United States. The eastern form usually shows green eyes, while the western form often shows blue eyes like the ones shown on this page. The copulating pair was photographed along the San Marcos River in San Marcos, Hays Co., Texas, in July, 2003, while the single female following was shot near Luling in Caldwell Co., Texas, also in July, 2003. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200 mm F2.8 L IS lens, a 2X extender and 550 EX flash.
As mentioned above, western populations show different eye color than eastern populations. In west Texas there are still other visual differences. The next three shots show several male Russet-tipped Clubtails photographed along the Rio Grande in Presidio Co., Texas, in September, 2006. They show the blue eyes of the central Texas bugs as illustrated in the shots at the beginning of the page, but note the lack of a "russet tip" at the end of the abdomen. The next three shots at right were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
