River Jewelwing
Calopteryx aequabilis
The River Jewelwing (Calopteryx aequabilis) is widespread on rivers and streams across the northern half of the U.S. and southern Canada. The males shown in the top 2 shots here were photographed along a stream in Algonquin Provincial Park, Nipissing Co., Ontario, Canada, in July, 2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash.
The next 4 images of River Jewelwing were taken along the South Fork John Day River, near Dayville, Grant Co., Oregon, in July, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. The first 2 shots show a male, then the 3rd shot down shows a female, and the 4th image shows a pair in copula.
The female River Jewelwing shown here was along the Machias River, Washington Co., Maine, in June, 2010. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.

The male River Jewelwing on the right was on the Vermilion River, Saint Louis Co., Minnesota, in July, 2011. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
