Ringed Forceptail
Phyllocycla breviphylla
The Ringed Forceptail (Phyllocycla breviphylla) is a little known tropical dragonfly which was first discovered in the United States in 2004. Since that time, it has proven to be locally common in some locations in deep south Texas, usually along the Rio Grande. It is similar in general appearance to several other Texas species such as Broad-striped Forceptail, Narrow-striped Forceptail, as well as Five-striped Leaftail, but with a little practice the field identification of the species is not difficult. The first 7 images on this page (5 shots of males, 2 of females) were all taken along the banks of the Rio Grande in Hidalgo Co., Texas, in June, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and flash.
The next two images show different female Ringed Forceptails. These shots were taken at the same time and place as the previous 5 shots.
The shot here was taken along the Rio Grande in Hidalgo Co., Texas, in June, 2008. It is a comparison image showing a male Broad-striped Forceptail (above) with a male Ringed Forceptail (below).

The next 2 shots show a pair of Ringed Forceptails in copula at Anzalduas Park, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in September, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and Canon 580 flash.
