The Red-veined Meadowhawk (Sympetrum madidum) occurs in the north western quarter of the United States, south and east to parts of Colorado. It is fairly large for a meadowhawk and shows stripes on the thorax and red veins in the wings when mature. Younger or teneral individuals, like the first five images on this page, show yellow veined wings. These first five shots, three of a female and two shots of a male, were taken in the Lost Lake area of Larimer Co., Colorado, in July, 2011 with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
