Orange Shadowdragon
Neurocordulia xanthosoma
The Orange Shadowdragon (Neurocordulia xanthosoma) is a dusk and dawn flying dragonfly of the southern plains of the mid west occurring from Illinois into Texas. It is usually not seen in daytime but becomes active at dusk, flying over rivers. The first 4 shots on this page show a male which was found perched in vegetation at mid morning on a cloudy day in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in April, 2010. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and Canon 580 flash.
The next three shots show female Orange Shadowdragons in McCurtain Co., Oklahoma, in July, 2011. In the 3rd shot the dragon rested on Berlin Heck's boot.
