Gray-waisted Skimmer AKA Narrow-winged Skimmer
Cannaphila insularis
Within the United States, the Gray-waisted Skimmer (Cannaphila insularis), formerly known as Narrow-winged Skimmer, has been found only in Texas but it occurs in Mexico, the West Indies and south to Panama. The first two shots of a lone female here were taken in August, 2004, along the San Antonio River in Breckenridge Park, San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300 mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash.
The next two shots show a male Gray-waisted Skimmer, also in San Antonio, Texas, but in August, 2005.
The next 2 shots of Gray-waisted Skimmer were taken at the same location as those previous, but in September, 2008. These 2 shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 EX flash.
The next 2 shots of a male Gray-waisted Skimmer were taken at the same location described for the above shots and with the same gear in August, 2009.
The next 3 shots of male Gray-waisted Skimmer were taken in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas, in July, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The Gray-waisted Skimmer male on the right was photographed at Palmetto State Park, Gonzales Co., Texas, in August, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
