Four-striped Leaftail
Phyllogomphoides stigmatus
The Four-striped Leaftail (Phyllogomphoides stigmatus) is a fairly large, showy clubtail of Texas. Thefirst two shots here were digital captures in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in May, 2003, and were shot with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 300 mm F4 L IS lens with a 1.4X extender and 550 EX flash. The Five-striped Leaftail (P. albrighti) is very similar in appearance and caution is needed in making the identification. I have created a page about the field characters of these two similar species. If you are interested, click here.
The next 3 images of Four-striped Leaftail (male, female, and another male) were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in June, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The male Four-striped Leaftail shown here was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in July, 2010. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
The pair in copula on the right was in Austin, Texas, in August, 2010. Same photo gear as previously described was used for this image.
This image shows a different angle and different perspective of the end of the abdomen of the male of the above pair and the thorax and eyes of the female.
I have added six more miscellaneous images of Four-striped Leaftails. The male on the right was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in June, 2003.

The male on the right was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in May, 2005.
The male Four-striped Leaftail on the right has captured a prey item. This image was taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in June, 2008.
The female Four-striped Leaftail on the right was at Coleto Creek Reservoir, Goliad Co., Texas, in July, 2010.
The male Four-striped Leaftail on the right was at Saxet Lake, Victoria Co., Texas, in September, 2011. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
The next three shots of Four-striped Leaftail were taken at the BLM overflow wetlands near Bottomless Lakes S.P., in Chaves Co., New Mexico, in July, 2012. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 580 flash. At present, this is the only known location for this species in New Mexico.
