Eight-spotted Skimmer
Libellula forensis
The Eight-spotted Skimmer (Libellula forensis) is a very common dragonfly of much of the western United States. It is superficially similar to the Twelve-spotted Skimmer, but unlike that species, the present species has pale or whitish wing tips. The first 2 shots shown here of a male were taken along the Green River in Sweetwater Co., Wyoming, in July, 2008, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The male shown here was along the South Fork John Day River near Dayville, Grant Co., Oregon, also in July, 2008.
The next 2 shots, of a male (at right) and female (next shot) were taken in the Malheur National Forest, Grant Co., Oregon, in July, 2008.
The next 2 shots of a male (at right) and female (next shot) were both taken along the Yakima River in Benton Co., Washington, in August, 2008, with the same gear described previously.
