Eastern Least Clubtail
Stylogomphus albistylus
The Eastern Least Clubtail (Stylogomphus albistylus) occurs along streams in the eastern third of the U.S. and parts of Canada. It ranges west to Minnesota and Wisconsin and south to some parts of Georgia and Alabama. It is one of the smaller clubtails and can be missed unless you watch for it carefully. It often perches on rocks in the middle of a flowing stream. The shots here were taken along Waba Creek, Arnprior, Renfrew Co., Ontario, Canada, in July, 2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash. The very similar Interior Least Clubtail (S. sigmastylus) occurs in parts of Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee.
The Eastern Least Clubtail shown here was on Holly Creek, Chattahoochee National Forest, Murray Co., Georgia, in July, 2005. This shot was taken with the same gear as the previous images.
The male Eastern Least Clubtail shown here was along the Narraguagus River, Washington Co., Maine, in August, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next 3 shots of a male Eastern Least Clubtail were taken along the West Branch Ingalls Brook, Washington Co., Maine, in August, 2009, with the same gear as the previous image.
The female Eastern Least Clubtail in the next two shots was at Witbeck Rapids, Michigamme River, Marquette Co., Michigan, in July, 2011. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
