Black Meadowhawk
Sympetrum danae
The Black Meadowhawk (Sympetrum danae) is widespread across parts of the northern and western United States and much of Canada. The female shown shown here was in a wet meadow near a stream in the Malheur National Forest, Grant Co., Oregon, in July, 2008. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The female Black Meadowhawk on the right provided a first county record when I netted it in the Turtle Mountain area of Bottineau Co., North Dakota in July, 2011.
The teneral male Black Meadowhawk in the next four shots was near Buyck, Saint Louis Co., Minnesota, in July, 2011. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and a Sigma 50-500mm lens and Canon 580 flash.
