Antillean Saddlebags
Tramea insularis
The Antillean Saddlebags (Tramea insularis) is a fairly uncommon dragonfly in the United States, known only from Florida and Texas. Within Texas it is known from only five counties in the southern portion of the state. The species is found primarily in the Bahamas and other Caribbean areas. In 2005, Martin Reid found a population of these dragons on a ranch near Pearsall in Frio County, Texas. In June, 2006, Martin took me to this location where I was able to get a few shots of several male Antillean Saddlebags. Two shots are shown here. These shots, digital captures, were all taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300 mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 580 EX flash.
The next 4 shots of a male Antillean Saddlebags were taken along the Nueces River in Uvalde Co., Texas, in July, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
