Fox Squirrel
Sciurus niger
The Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger), or Eastern Fox Squirrel of some authors, is a resident tree squirrel of the eastern two thirds of the United States. It is somewhat larger than the Eastern Gray Squirrel, with which it is sometimes found. The Fox Squirrel in the top two images here was sitting atop a bird feeder in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in March, 2007. The animal sat in this curious pose for several minutes before scurrying off up a pecan tree. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
The female Fox Squirrel in the next three images was in Buescher State Park, Bastrop Co., Texas, in May, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and a 580 flash. In the 2nd shot the squirrel is shown scratching her chin on the branch.
The Fox Squirrel shown here was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in April, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The next 4 shots of Fox Squirrel were taken in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in January, 2010.
The Fox Squirrel in the next two shots was in Weslaco, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in December, 2010.
