Common Raccoon
Procyon lotor
The Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor) is a widespread mammal of most of North America and parts of Mexico. It is found in a variety of habitats from woodlands to swamps and marshes to riparian areas. The three shots shown here show a Raccoon foraging in water on a November morning on Sanibel Island, Lee Co., Florida, in 2006. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The Raccoon shown here was visiting a wildlife feeder near Pearsall, Frio Co., Texas, in November, 2007. This shot was taken with the same gear described previously.
The next 5 shots show 3 young Raccoons in a pecan tree in Austin, Travis Co., Texas in late June, 2009. These 3 young raccoons were actually in my back yard and when I opened the door they ran up a tree and gave me a few cute shots before they went higher up into the limbs. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens.
