Tropical Checkered-Skipper
Pyrgus oileus
The Tropical Checkered-Skipper (Pyrgus oileus) is visually very similar to the Common Checkered-Skipper and care is needed to make the identification. The Tropical Checkered-Skipper has a more restricted range within the United States and is mainly found in the deep south. The first image on this page was taken at Santa Ana N.W.R., Hidalgo Co., Texas, in October, 2009, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
