American Snout
Libytheana carinenta
The American Snout (Libytheana carinenta) is a very common butterfly across much of the United States and Mexico. The first 9 shots here were all taken in the spring of 2006 in Hidalgo Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and flash.
The snouts in the next two images were resting on a mesquite bean pod.
The American Snout shown here was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in early January, 2003. This represented the first January record for the species in the Austin area, but during mild winters they can be around. The shot was taken with a Canon D60 and an EF 180mm F/3.5 Macro and 2X extender.
The American Snout shown here was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in November, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon 50D and a Sigma 150mm F/2.8 Macro lens.
The American Snouts in the next three shots were in Dripping Springs, Hays Co., Texas, in November, 2013.
The American Snout on the right was in Mission, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in February, 2014.
