African Fish-Eagle
Haliaeetus vocifer
African Fish-Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) is related to the Bald Eagle, more familiar to North American observers. Like the name implies, this species primarily feeds on fish. This bird was making a pass at a fish on the Okavango River near Shakawe, Botswana, in October, 1998. The photos were taken with a Canon EOS 1N & EF 300mm F4L IS lens hand-held on a BushHawk shoulder mount. The film used was Fuji Sensia 100. Shutter speed unrecorded but probably 1/250 second. This was taken from a series of 8 frames shot with a motor drive as the bird passed by the boat I was in. Late afternoon available light; no flash. Note the very full crop of this bird from a recent meal.
This is a different individual from further down the river.
