| Diademed Sandpiper-Plover (Phegornis mitchellii) is an uncommon to rare species of the high Andes Mountains. In most of its range it is necessary to visit elevations of 14,000 feet or more to find this bird, but in the southern part of its range in Chile, the species can be found in some locations at about 8,000 feet elevation. The birds on this page were photographed near El Yeso Reservoir in Chile. The photo at the left was taken in January, 1996 with a Canon T-90 & FD 400mm F4.5 lens on Fuji Sensia 200 film. The camera and lens were mounted on a Bogen tripod. The photo below of a newly hatched chick was taken on the same day with the same gear. Apparently, there are very few photos of a newly hatched chick of this species. |

| The photo left above was taken at the same location as the above shots, but two years later, in January, 1998. The bird is sitting on a nest, incubating two eggs. This photo was taken with a Canon T-90 & Sigma 500mm F4.5 lens on a Bogen tripod on Fuji Sensia 100. My visits to this location have all been at mid-day, so the lighting is rather harsh. The left below photo was taken in January, 1999, with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 300mm F4/L IS lens with a 1.4X on Fuji Velvia. |

| The next 8 images all show the same incubating bird as above, in January and February 1998. These shots give a more complete view of the nesting site on a raised area surrounded by mud flats near a marsh at the upper end of El Yeso Reservoir. |
