The Winter Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) breeds across parts of the northern United States as well as much of Canada. The species winters across a wide area of the eastern United States south to Florida and Texas. The breeding populations in the northwest, which were, until recently, considered the Pacific "form" of Winter Wren, are quite a bit darker than the eastern populations and have recently been split into a separate species called Pacific Wren (Troglodytes pacificus). Interestingly, Winter Wren also occurs in Europe where it is the only wren species and thus is called simply the "Wren". The first 4 shots on this page show a Winter Wren which was photographed in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in December, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
