Western Screech-Owl
Otus kennicottii
The Western Screech-Owl (Otus kennicottii) occurs across much of the western United States and parts of coastal western Canada southward into central Mexico. It inhabits a wide range of habitats and elevations. This species has a very different vocalization from Eastern Screech-Owl and displays a mostly black bill as opposed to the Eastern's greenish bill. The Western Screech-Owls shown here were photographed in April, 2003, in Tucson, Pima Co., AZ. These were digital shots with a Canon EOS 10D and an EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and flash.
The next 6 images of Western Screech-Owl were taken in Catalina, Pima Co., Arizona, in March, 2009, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens and flash.
The next 5 images of Western Screech-Owl were taken in Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co., Texas, in May, 2010.
This Western Screech-Owl has captured a centipede. The next shots show the bird eating this centipede.
