Summer Tanager
Piranga rubra
The Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) nests in the southeast United States and in parts of the southwest. It occupies riparian areas, mixed woodlands, parks, etc. The bird shown here, a molting male, was at Marathon, Brewster Co., Texas, in September, 2005. It was digitally photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The young male Summer Tanager in the next 3 images was near Vanderpool, Bandera Co., Texas, in April, 2008. This is a bird which was hatched the previous year, thus the plumage that is still partially yellow. These images were taken with a canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
The mature male Summer Tanager shown here was in Pima Co., Arizona, in May, 2008. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
