Sanderling
Calidris alba
This Sanderling (Calidris alba) was running along the wet sand at Bolivar Flats, Galveston Co., Texas in September, 1999. It was photographed with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 600 mm F4 lens with a 1.4X extender from a tripod on Fuji Sensia 100. From a series of about 8 frames, this is the best shot. This species can be extremely hard to capture well on film since they are so active. In this particular shot the bird is actually in mid-air!
The next 3 images shown here were taken on the jetty at Quintana, Brazoria Co., Texas, in December, 2007, with a Canon EOS 40D and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The next 3 shots of Sanderlings were taken on South Padre Island, Texas, in April, 2009. These bird are just beginning to moult into breeding plumage.
The winter plumaged Sanderling shown here was at Port Aransas, Nueces Co., Texas, in February, 2010.
The next 6 images of mostly breeding plumaged Sanderlings were taken on South Padre Island, Cameron Co., Texas, in May, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
