Pacific Loon
Gavia pacifica
The Pacific Loon (Gavia pacifica) nests in the arctic regions of Canada and Alaska but comes south to winter along the Pacific coast of the United States as well as scattered inland locations across the country. In Texas, the species is uncommon to rare in the winter, depending on the year. The basic plumaged Pacific Loon in the top 5 images shown here was at Balmorhea Lake, Reeves Co., Texas, in January, 2009. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
