Osprey
Pandion haliaetus
The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) occurs across most of north and central America as well as in northern Europe. It can be found all across the United States and Mexico at various seasons so it is a species familiar to most Americans with even a casual interest in wildlife. Ospreys feed on fish and will readily utilize artificial nesting platforms. In Florida, for example, artificial nesting platforms are routinely erected on poles near both coasts, and Ospreys are commonly seen nesting successfully on them. The Osprey immediately below was feeding on a fish near Boca Chica Beach at the mouth of the Rio Grande in Cameron Co., Texas in November 2003. This is a digital image taken with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 600 mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4 X extender. The next shot shows an Osprey photographed with the same gear at Brady Reservoir, McCulloch Co., Texas, in March, 2004l.
The next shots at right were taken on Captiva Island, Lee Co., Florida, in November, 2006, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The Osprey shown here kept a wary eye on me as he passed overhead at Lake Tohopekaliga, Osceola Co., Florida, in March, 2007. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
The Osprey in the next two shots was bathing in the Jefferson River at Cardwell, Jefferson Co., Montana, in June, 2007.
The Osprey in the next 4 shots was at Balmorhea Lake in Reeves Co., Texas in September, 2009. The first 2 shots show the bird diving toward the water in an attempt to catch a fish, which it missed. The 3rd shot shows the bird shaking water off itself after it took off from the water. The 4th shot shows the bird giving me a good examination as it flew past. These shots were all taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
