Mangrove Cuckoo
Coccyzus minor
The Mangrove Cuckoo (Coccyzus minor) is a resident of tropical deciduous forest, mangrove forest and gallery forests across most of the Caribbean Islands as well as parts of Mexico and Central America. It is a rare resident of south Florida and has occurred in a few other states along the Gulf of Mexico. The first two shots here were taken in Guanica, Puerto Rico, in July, 1998, with a Canon T-90 and FD 400mm F/4.5 lens on Fuji Sensia. The bird in these photos as well as those which occur in Florida visually look the same and may be of the subspecies maynardi. The vagrants to Texas are thought to be of the subspecies continentalis and are more buffy underneath and darker overall than the Florida birds. The 3rd shot shows an early Texas record.
This image shows a Mangrove Cuckoo at Port Bolivar, Galveston Co., Texas, in January, 1982. This was the first photographed Texas record and one of only ten records for Texas through 2010. The shot of the Texas bird is a poor quality image but is posted here for any birdwatchers wishing to see one of the early Texas records. The vagrants to Texas are thought to be of the subspecies continentalis and are more buffy underneath and darker overall than the Florida or Caribbean birds.
